Mulch makes for an excellent top dressing around plants and shrubbery. In the warmer months, a covering of mulch is great for water retention by preventing evaporation. However, in the wintertime it provides an insulated layer between the harsh temperatures and plant roots protecting from frost. We recommend at least a two inch top-dressing for best results.
â– Mulch is made with decomposed vegetation which is cooked naturally outdoors. It goes through a screening process leaving a finer product, similar to our composts. Being that the vegetation is not completely broken down, as it continues to age, it will provide a slow release of nutrition into the soil and in turn, your plants. It is used mostly as a top-dressing and we discourage mixing it into the soil as the wood products will leach nitrogen as it continues the decomposing phase.
â– We do not recommend mulch if you are looking for the best option in weed prevention. Although once laid in a thick layer it will smoother out the weeds below- it is cooked from decomposed vegetation in a natural outdoor setting and does contain weed spores. Meaning that it will sprout up weeds as the sun and moisture encourages those weeds to grow. We would instead recommend a product that is cooked at a controlled temperature in an indoor setting, such as our Fine Organic Compost.
